The WPT and EPT ended
And with them, the 2011 major poker tournament season nears its end
It’s been a while since we talked about the latest poker news in the greatest major poker tournaments, but this doesn’t mean that the poker scene has been missing in action lately. It’s business as usual for the pro poker players and everyone interested in the sport, and we can now scratch off two of the last major poker tournaments of the year: a WPT stage and an EPT stage.
The latest stage of one of the largest poker events in the world, the World Poker Tour, was held at the famous Bellagio, and it provided the level of entertainment that is to be expected from an event of such magnitude. The final table, at least, is reported to be one of the most spectacular finish lines for this year’s major poker events.
In the final moments of this stage of the WPT, Antonio Esfandiari, the reigning WPT champion, was the first to leave the final table, placing 6th and winning $119,418 from his endeavor. He was followed by Victor Coelho, in 5th, with $159,224, and Andrew Lichtenberger in 4th place, with about $218k. Vanessa Selbst placed third, and she gained $338,351 from this year’s WPT. This sent the battle into the heads up stage, where Soi Nguyen finished second, winning just over half a million dollars ($517k, to be more precise), and James Dempsey coming out the big winner, after winning nearly $800,000, as well as a coveted WPT bracelet.
In a totally different part of the world, the EPT also had a stage in Prague, where the Germans are out conquering once again. Martin Finger placed first in this stop for the European Poker Tour, and he won a nice check for €720,000 for his troubles. He was followed in the leaderboard by David Boyaciyan, a Dutch player, who got €535,000, and Nicolas Levi, from France, who gained €270,000. Unlike the WPT, the EPT’s final table was just about set from the get go, as Martin Finger entered the final table as the chip leader, and despite the efforts from the other players, he managed to stick to his position.
And that’s just about all we have from the latest major poker tournaments. They pretty much conclude a great season filled with activities!
